Tracey Rose

About

South African Artist Tracey Rose is currently a 2012/2013 DAAD Visiting Artist.  Rose's work includes Performance Art, Video Installation and Photography.  The reconstruction of metaphor and language through props and costume now finds its way in objects d'art.  The San Pedro V character from her Performance Video Installation "Ciao Bella" 2001 produced for the Harald Szeeman curated 49th Venice biennale "Plateaus of Humanity" is crassly constructed by crude stitches and fabric spherical structure as a comment on the current war on Muslims, labelled "The War on Terror".
The unlimited edition gives life to the video performance piece San Pedro V 'The Hope I hope' which sees her urinating on the Dividing Wall in Abu Dis East Jerusalem, in an alchemaic gesture illustrating pun and magic:  URINATION is the phonetic equivalent of "You Are A Nation".  The video was recorded by Christopher Wessels, and has been included in major exhibitions such as the Victoria Noorthorn curated Lyon Bienale 2011 " A Terrible Beauty is Born"; and Rose's current traveling mid-career survey show "Waiting for God" which debuted at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and travelled to Bildmuseet in Umea, Sweden and the Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen, Denmark, curated by Khwezi Gule and Renaud Prosh.
